Brown rice in rice cooker

Brown Basmati Rice for Two (Rice Cooker)
Here is the exact scaled-down recipe for two people using your 1-button rice cooker and your specific water formula.
  • Prep time: 5 minutes
  • Soak time: 30 minutes
  • Cook + Rest time: ~1 hour
  • Yield: 2 generous servings
Ingredients
  • 1 cup brown basmati rice
  • 3 cups cold water total (2 cups base + 1 cup extra)
  • 2 green cardamom pods (cracked open slightly)
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp ghee or coconut oil
  • ¼ tsp salt
Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Rinse: Put the 1 cup of dry rice into the cooker pot. Fill with cold water, swirl with your fingers, and pour off the cloudy water. Repeat 3 times until the water runs mostly clear. Drain completely.
  2. Measure Water: Pour exactly 3 cups of fresh cold water over the rinsed rice.
  3. Soak: Leave the pot alone to soak for 30 minutes. Do not turn the machine on yet.
  4. Spice: Stir in the turmeric, salt, and ghee or coconut oil. Drop the cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon stick on top.
  5. Cook: Close the lid and press the switch down so the red light turns on.
  6. Steam Rest: When the switch clicks up and the orange light turns on, do not open the lid. Let the rice steam undisturbed for 15 minutes.
  7. Serve: Open the lid, pluck out the whole spices (cinnamon, cloves, cardamom), and fluff the yellow rice gently with a fork.
Reheating to Restore Fluffiness
Brown rice can dry out and turn hard in the fridge. To make it soft and fluffy again, you need to reintroduce moisture.
  • In the Microwave (Fastest): Put the rice in a microwave-safe bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of water over the top. Cover the bowl with a damp paper towel or a loose lid to trap the steam. Microwave on high for 1 to 2 minutes until steaming hot, then fluff with a fork.
  • On the Hob (Best for texture): Place the rice into a small saucepan. Add 2 tablespoons of water or vegetable broth. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook over low heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until heat goes all the way through.
